SIMSBURY RECYCLING COMMITTEE

CALL TO ORDER: 7:40 pm
PRESENT: Chair Mary Turner, Lori Fernand, Gwen Moraski, Jill Paterson, Andrew Rose, Lonni Schulz and Dane Woodberry.
GUESTS: Simsbury High School Students Claudia Szerakowski and MacKenzie Stelle
MINUTES: Gwen Moraski motioned that the February minutes be accepted. Jill Paterson seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
CORRESPONDENCE: No Committee correspondence.
RECYCLING NEWS:
-Wethersfield Transfer Station adding trailer for electronic waste. Mary Turner has been speaking with Mike Paine about the possibility of having a similar set up in Simsbury;
-Legislation banning the use of plastic bags in State Legislature;
-Representative Schofield’s “Linda’s Litter Lugging Day” will be held on April 18th;
-Earth Hour scheduled for March 28th. Town of Simsbury is participating.
REPORTS:
Supervisor of Grounds and Buildings/Recycling Program-Curriculum-
-Gwen Moraski is following up with Steve Twitchell, the Director of Maintenance for Simsbury Schools, about recycle bins at the High School;
-Lonni Schulz spoke with Jan Manchester about recycling efforts around school lunches;
-It was noted the school playgrounds do not have recycling bins and should;
-It was also noted the recycling bins need to be placed at Town fields and on the Rails to Trails paths. Mary Turner is talking to the Town about recycling needs on Town properties.
NEW BUSINESS: Gwen Moraski made a motion to move New Business up in the agenda. It was seconded by Dane Woodbury and passed unanimously.
-Jill Paterson reported on her correspondence with five local dairies regarding their usage of Plastics 3-7 in packaging their food products. Correspondence was sent to Cabot, Garelick, Guida, Hood, and Stonefield, inquiring about using only Plastics 1 and 2 in their packaging. A reply should be received shortly.
-A discussion of Committee priorities was undertaken. Some members expressed a desire to take on additional projects in order to expand the impact of the Committee’s work. In looking to do this, it was agreed to invite State Representative Linda Schofield to our next meeting.
REPORTS:
Swap Center-
Opening on April 18th, unless it is raining. The new building is not in place yet due to weather.
Nike Reuse-A-Shoe-
-Letters and fliers have been sent out to schools.
-A letter has also been created tailored to businesses. Lori Fernand will send copies of the letters-both the school version and business version-and a copy of the flier. All Committee Members can then ask businesses they frequent if they will participate.
-Committee Members who engage businesses will report that information to the Committee.
Town Bulky Waste and Recycling Center Brochure update-
Dane Woodberry is working on the necessary edits and gathering additional information that can be included. A draft will be presented at the next meeting.
