SIMSBURY RECYCLING COMMITTEE
Thursday, May 28, 2009
CALL TO ORDER: 7:35 pm
PRESENT: Chair Mary Turner, Andrew Rose, and Dane Woodberry
LIAISONS: Simsbury High School Students Claudia Szerakowski and MacKenzie Stelle
MINUTES: No vote as quorum was not present. {The April 23, 2009 meeting was not held due to Quorum not present.}
CORRESP0NDENCE: None
RECYCLING NEWS: None
REPORTS:
School: Mary Turner reported that the Trash Museum trip fell through as the needed minimum of 6 student participants was not met even though an effort was made to cast the invitation net wider than just Henry James students. Maybe next year.
Swap Center Update: Mary Turner thanked Claudia and MacKenzie for volunteering to take/cover a time slot at the Swap Shop, but emphasized the need for an individual over the age of 21 to be present for the security of all. Mary further reported that the new Swap Shop had yet to be set up, but hoped that such would be happening within the next month. Current efforts are underway to clean up the current Swap Shop in preparation of the move. Further, Mary will be meeting with Town First Selectman Mary Glassman and others (perhaps representative of Paine’s Inc.) to clarify some issues concerning the new “arrangements” of the new Swap Shop: location, charge, procedures. It is hoped that an Opening Ceremony for the new Swap Shop could be arranged.
Nike Reuse A Shoe Program: though not present, Lori Fernand, reported thru Mary Turner that the program has been launched and will be ongoing through June 15th. Collection containers have been set up at various sites: Simsbury High School, Latimer Lane School, Town Hall, Library, Eno Hall, Henry James School, 2 Batison’s locations. Dane to be in touch with Lori to help facilitate the collection of shoes and delivery to facility at the town landfill.
Town Bulky Waste & Recycling Center Brochure: Still a work in progress. Dane to be finalizing this for the next meeting.
OLD BUSINESS: Mary Turner on behalf of Jill Paterson mentioned the outstanding issue of “plastics;” we will await a report from Jill on the status of her project and correspondence.
SIMSBURY RECYCLING COMMITTEE
Thursday, May 28, 2009
[CONTINUED]
NEW BUSINESS:
*Claudia and MacKenzie indicated their willingness to work on identifying their replacements/representatives for next year’s involvement with the Recycling Committee – maybe inviting that/those individual/s to our next meeting.
*It was noted that an invitation was in the works to invite Representative Linda Schofield to attend this evenings meeting, but such was cancelled when it became evident the Committee’s attendance would be minimal. Mary Turner pointed out our next meeting will be on Thursday, June 25, 2009. If Committee members can commit in advance to attend and so advise Mary, she will try to extend an invitagion to Representative Schofield to that meeting.
ADJOURNMENT: 8:05 pm
Respectfully submitted,
N. Dane Woodberry
